A little taste of Americana in small town Ireland.
July 2026, It’s hot; the town is both dusty and sticky, all at the same time.
The week prior, I saw online that a monster truck/stunt show was coming to Gorey.
I had a couple of free hours the Saturday they were due to be in town, So I got in touch on Instagram to see if I could come and take some photographs of the the show.
At first they thought I was pitching for work, but I reassured them that this was to be part of a larger ongoing project on small-town Ireland, so they were more than happy to have me down. I met with my contact at the gate, and she brought me behind the barricades to the main arena.
A large audience was seated on one side of a large makeshift race track, and on the other were the haulage trucks, chalets and mobile homes belonging to the troupe. There I was right in the middle of the track , behind the performers and facing the crowd. I ducked down amongst the mangled cars and dirt bikes, with great big monster trucks flying past, and happily photographed the bizarre goings on. Music blared over the tannoy - The Village People- and a dude walked around presumably overseeing things, in big old cowboy boots and a Stetson. It all felt quite Trumpian and more than a little camp.
After the show - which was great, I photographed the performers against the wall of a caravan, said my goodbyes, and off I went to pick the kids up from a birthday party.
