Nostalgia - A wistful desire to return in thought or in fact to a former time in one's life, to one's home or homeland, or to one's
family and friends; a sentimental yearning for the happiness of a former place or time.
Saturday mornings in the late 80’s and early 90’s were eagerly anticipated all week by an entire generation of 3 channel kids. Shows like Scratch Saturday, Wacaday and Live and Kicking were the main staples of that era. luckily, I recently met up with the presenter of Wacaday - the fantastic Timmy Mallett, and we had a portrait session together. The series will form part of a larger project that I’m currently working on around the idea of nostalgia - how it is formed and then how it remains with us throughout Adulthood.
While I myself am not particularly nostalgic, I do find it fascinating how prevalent it has become in modern parlance, be it through advertising, music or entertainment. In an ever-evolving world, perhaps we long for 3 channels and less choice.
Or at the very least we romanticise a simpler time, which is something that every generation is surely guilty of.
